How the NWT translated the phrase “Truly, I say to you...”

Expressions in a language don’t vary a lot. Many of them are fixed forms. Here is a long list of English examples (more, more, and more).

The Greek phrase “αμην λεγω σοι | υμιν” (truly, I say to you) is a fixed phrase that occurs 76 times in the Gospels. Its only variations involve the word “truly” (Matthew and Mark only use it once per expression; John repeats the word twice in 25 verses) and the “you” portion, either singular (9x) or plural (67x) which was determined by whom Jesus was speaking to. The New World Translation (hereafter: NWT) has placed the comma right after the “you” 63 times and 13 times the expression occurs without a comma. Commas are commonly used to separate clauses, among other things.

The Greek expression almost invariably has this form:

There are two exceptions to the invariable claim above. The first occurs in the verse Luke 23:43 where the word for “you” appears before the verb “say.” This “fronting” would put emphasis on the “you.” The second occurs in Luke 11:51 where the word “naí” (meaning “yes”) replaces the word for “amen” (meaning “verily” or “truly”). Greek grammar also allows the words δε (often not expressed in English) and γαρ (meaning “for”) to be inserted as the second word in a Greek sentence. They occur in the verses Matt 5:18; 10:23; 13:7; 17:20; and Mark 14:9. But in English grammar these words would always occur at the beginning of a sentence, thus before the phrase “truly I say to you.”

The Watchtower Society (hereafter: WTS) claims that it has tried to translate the Bible literally whenever possible. In Appendix A1 of the NWT (2013 edition) they provide their principles of translation:

1. Sanctify God’s name by restoring it to its rightful place in the Scriptures. — Matthew 6:9.
2. Accurately convey the original message that was inspired by God. — 2 Timothy 3:16.
3. Translate expressions literally when the wording and structure of the target language allow for such renderings of the original-language text.
4. Communicate the correct sense of a word or a phrase when a literal rendering would distort or obscure the meaning.
5. Use natural, easy-to-understand language that encourages reading. — Nehemiah 8:8,12.

Paraphrases of the Scriptures are not offered. Rather, an effort has been made to give as literal a translation as possible where the modern-English idiom allows and where a literal rendition does not, by any awkwardness, hide the thought. In that way the desire of those who are scrupulous for getting an almost word-for-word statement of the original is met. It is realized that even such a seemingly insignificant matter as the use or omission of a comma or of a definite or an indefinite article may at times alter the correct sense of the original passage.
Taking liberties with the texts for the mere sake of brevity, and substituting some modern parallel when a literal rendering of the original makes good sense, has been avoided.

The book Reasoning from the Scriptures (q.v. Bible p. 64) rightly observes that “It is true that some translations of the Bible adhere more closely to what is in the original languages than others do. Modern paraphrase Bibles have taken liberties that at times alter the original meaning. Some translators have allowed personal beliefs to color their renderings. But these weaknesses can be identified by comparison of a variety of translations.”

The complete New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures is now printed in seven languages and has been circulated world wide in 23 million copies. In the foreword to the 1950 first edition of the Christian Greek Scriptures, it is stated: “We offer no paraphrase of the Scriptures. Our endeavor all through has been to give as literal a translation as possible, where modern English idiom allows and where a literal rendition does not for any clumsiness hide the thought. In that way we can best meet the desire of those who are scrupulous for getting, as nearly as possible, word for word, the exact statement of the original.” In view of such integrity, a Bible student can, in full confidence, approach this translation and measure the thoughts of the original inspired writings.
...When Paul wrote to the Christian congregation at Colossae, he spoke of the need to have “accurate knowledge” and the ‘riches of the full assurance of our understanding.’ (Col. 2:2) The New World Translation has undertaken to draw its readers as closely as possible to the original divinely inspired writings. It merits serious study. Jehovah’s Witnesses are grateful to have this translation for use at their meetings, in their public preaching activity and for vital personal research. Yes, it really does matter which Bible translation you use.

Did the NWT translate literally?

Here is a table of the various ways this Greek expression was translated in the NWT. The coloured cells below would be the closest to the original Greek form in terms of word order. The second table shows how various versions have translated Luke 23:43. Notice the position of the comma in each of them.

Has the NWT translation of this Greek expression followed the stated principles of the WTS? Have they satisfied those “who are scrupulous for getting an almost word-for-word” rendition of the original? When the 76 instances get extracted out of the main text and presented with frequency of occurrence it becomes clear that the NWT has not achieved their stated principle of translating this Greek expression literally. They have translated this expression 14 different ways! (There are 11 variations with the presence of comma and 3 variations without the comma.) By comparison, the KJV has translated it 2 different ways, reflecting the repeated “amen” in John. In one instance a comma is used for a doctrinal purpose as well. This is admitted in the Introduction to the NWT (1984) that the use of a comma “may at times alter the correct sense of the original passage.” In Luke 23:43 they place the comma after the word “today”, insinuating that all other translations have altered the correct sense of the original and only they got it right. So we can ask, does the word “today” actually belong to the expression, or does it belong to the next clause?

The last sentence in the quote from the Reasoning from the Scriptures (q.v. Bible p. 64) book is interesting. (“But these weaknesses can be identified by comparison of a variety of translations.”) Does the WTS really stand by that sentence? A weakness of any given passage in any given translation would be the outlier when compared to other translations. Since there are no other translations that have such variety in translating this Greek expression and since none of them place the comma after the word “today” in Luke 23:43, that makes the NWT the outlier among Bible translations. According to their own criteria this shows that they “have allowed personal beliefs to color their renderings.”

It is very clear that this Greek expression does not include any words that indicate a time reference, otherwise a time reference would also occur in at least some of the 75 other instances. Indeed, the passage in Luke 23:43 makes no sense when the word “today” is added to the expression. If it is part of the expression, then its presence modifies some part of the expression. Which part does it modify? The word “say” or the word “truly?” Does this mean that Jesus needed to remind the thief on the cross when he was speaking to him? Not yesterday; not tomorrow or another day, but “today?” Prior to the ability to record speech when else could audible direct speech occur other than at the present time? Or does it mean that “today” Jesus will be telling the truth? On any other day it would not be so certain? This is also clearly out of the question!

No, the reason for this misplaced comma is to undermine support for a doctrine that the WTS has rejected since its founding in the 1870’s, namely that the dead have a spiritual existence after life. If this expression would have occurred only once in scripture, we might not have known that this was an expression in Koine Greek. But it has been repeated 76 times in the Gospels, with extremely limited variation in Greek! All of the 75 times it occurs without a time reference is very strong evidence that this expression does NOT include any time references. The word “today” belongs to the following phrase and not to the expression “truly I say to you.”

Further, when you filter the table below using the “^that” button (this searches for verses that begin with the word “that” in the Post column) you will see that all of the instances of the Greek expression end without a comma. This shows that the word “that” following the Greek expression (in the Center column) acts as a boundary of the expression. Thus we can say that the NWT has moved the comma in 1 instance out of 76 to support a preferred religious view. So why does the WTS make the claims that the NWT is a literal translation, careful even in the placements of commas? This translation gets used predominantly by Jehovah’s Witnesses, not in other churches. Could it be that the above claims (of being an accurate translation) are merely Public Relations (PR) speak? Are they just trying to say the appropriate things in order to get the trust of followers? In other situations the NWT has shown that it is fully prepared to disregard the oldest and best manuscripts and insert words into the translation that have never been seen there before to support their own doctrinal convictions, while at the same time criticizing some translations (eg. KJV) for having renditions that are not in the oldest manuscripts.
