“Logos” = “the Word”

With a single phrase John gets his point across to two different cultures, and he is the only one to use it. Jesus is called “the Word” in nearly everything John writes (John 1:1,14; 1Jn 1:1; 5:7; Rev 19:13). However, Gentiles and Jews read the same phrase and act with two radically different thought patterns, but they reach the same conclusion: John is introducing Jesus as a Divine being.

John does this by calling Jesus the Word, “Logos” in Greek.

Greek philosophers of the day teach that “Logos” is the mysterious principle behind the universe – the eternal force that drives everything.

Jewish scholars on the other hand, teach, “In the beginning God created the heaven the earth.” (Gen. 1:1) And God did this by simply speaking the Word. “God said, ‘Let there be light and there was light.’” (Gen. 1:3). The Word of God created the universe,

John is telling Jews and Gentiles alike that Jesus is the Divine force behind the universe. It’s a startling statement so John spends the rest of his Gospel proving it.
